Litz Wire

Taped Litz Wire — QAMPIEngineered for High Breakdown Voltage

Taped construction delivers superior mechanical protection and defined creepage distance for demanding insulation requirements.

Unlike served litz wire (which uses porous textile), taped litz wire wraps the conductor bundle with a continuous dielectric film — creating a solid insulation barrier rated for high breakdown voltage. This is essential for applications where primary-to-secondary isolation must meet stringent safety standards such as IEC 60950 and IEC 62368.

Three tape constructions are available. Standard (non-adhesive) tape is held by tension and overlap geometry, providing good dielectric strength with maximum flexibility. Thermally sealed tape bonds to compatible wire enamels through heat activation for elevated dielectric performance. Self-adhesive tape uses a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer for permanent closure — the most secure option for maintaining creepage distance compliance through thermal cycling and vibration.

Breakdown Voltage

Continuous dielectric film barrier provides rated insulation up to 1,000 Vrms. Specialized multi-layer constructions support operating voltages up to 10,000V.

Defined Creepage Distance

Sealed tape construction ensures compliance with safety standards (IEC 60950, IEC 62368) by maintaining controlled creepage between primary and secondary windings.

Tape Material Options

PET film (105°C, UL), PEN film (180°C), or Polyimide film (200°C+, V-0 flammability). Each available in standard, thermally sealed, or self-adhesive variants.

Overlap Configuration

Available in 50% (half-lap) or 67% (two-thirds-lap) winding with 1–2 layers. Higher overlap and more layers increase dielectric strength at the cost of flexibility.

Applications

Taped litz wire is used in high-voltage isolation transformers, medical power supplies, telecom and server power supplies, EV onboard chargers, and any application requiring reinforced or supplementary insulation per IEC 60950/62368 safety standards. The continuous dielectric film barrier provides defined creepage distance critical for primary-to-secondary isolation in safety-certified designs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the advantage of taped litz wire over served litz wire?+
Taped litz wire wraps the conductor with a continuous dielectric film instead of porous textile, creating a solid insulation barrier rated for high breakdown voltages up to 10,000V. This provides defined creepage distance required for safety certifications (IEC 60950, IEC 62368), which served litz wire cannot offer. Choose served litz wire when you need mechanical stability but not voltage isolation; choose taped when dielectric performance and safety compliance are priorities.
What tape materials does YIDA use for taped litz wire?+
YIDA offers three tape materials: PET film (105°C, UL recognized, most cost-effective), PEN film (180°C, superior thermal endurance), and polyimide film (200°C+, V-0 flammability rating, highest performance). Each is available in standard, thermally sealed, or self-adhesive variants. Taping is applied in 50% (half-lap) or 67% (two-thirds-lap) overlap with 1-2 layers.
Is taped litz wire suitable for high-voltage applications?+
Yes. Standard taped litz wire provides rated insulation up to 1,000 Vrms. Specialized multi-layer constructions with polyimide tape can support operating voltages up to 10,000V. The continuous film barrier and controlled overlap ensure reliable dielectric performance throughout the rated service life. YIDA can engineer the tape configuration to meet your specific voltage and creepage requirements.
What is self-adhesive taped litz wire used for?+
Self-adhesive taped litz wire uses pressure-sensitive adhesive to create a permanent seal between tape layers. This prevents tape unwinding during thermal cycling, vibration, or repeated flexing, making it the most secure option for maintaining creepage distance compliance over the product lifetime. It is commonly specified in automotive power electronics, medical equipment, and aerospace applications where long-term insulation integrity is critical.
